The Sensory Stylist and The McNeill Children's Institute have collaborated, creating The Sensory Salon on Sundays! Sensory-friendly haircuts held in an award-winning atmosphere designed for children with Autism. Children of all ages are welcomed, and haircuts include a complimentary goodie bag filled with sensory toys. All at discounted rates! The Sensory Salon on Sundays is held once a month at the McNeill Children's Institute North Kingstown or Portsmouth locations. Making changes for the Neuro Diverse and Special Needs Community of Rhode Island! ⚓️
I learned that at-home hair services weren't allowed here in Rhode Island. However, home hair-care was allowed for wedding parties and for prom or like events. I saw a need for home hair services primarily for individuals living with disabilities or sensory related differences, and thought that it was wrong to not have the right to perform proper hair-care for this community. I knew a change needed to be made in order to allow this accessibility. Luckily, I met a group of incredibly knowledgeable women who taught me the legislation process on how to submit a bill. After months of voting, collecting testimonials, and attending State House hearings our bill that would now allow at-home hair/ nails services for individuals living with disabilities or sensory related matters was passed! Signed by our Governor on Friday the 13th, 2025. We are proud to have made Rhode Island history for the special needs, neuro diverse and the elderly community of the Ocean State!
Meet The Sensory Stylist
Kristin L. Schober-Owner/ Master Stylist
Born and raised in Rhode Island, Kristin has over twenty years experience working with a variety of sensory matters and hair-care. She got her start as a hairdresser working at a kids salon, learning how to adapt to movement. Then later on down the line, she gained knowledge in an assortment of neurological diagnoses and behavior programs from working as a caregiver in group homes who housed adults with developmental disabilities.
